"It's tough being the one there holding a father and mother when they just lost their son"

That's what my friend Matt DeMatteo shared yesterday with our pastoral team after Johnny Vargas passed away. Around 1am I received this string of texts from Matt:

Johnny's death came from a gang related shooting (Tribune link). He was only 19 years old.

Happy Birthday Jeannette!

March 10th is one of my favorite days in the calendar year. It is the day God brought my wonderful wife into the world. I am so incredibly thankful not just for her but for who she is. For her heart, for her love of life, for her spontaneousness, for her being such a great mom, for her being such an amazing wife. She is everything to me!!!

Happy Birthday Jeannette! I love you so much!

For those who know my wife - YES, I did get permission to post this pic =)

Clouds of power, clouds of beauty

In Nashville for work yesterday, the city was under tornado warnings. The guy who handed me car keys at the rental booth said, "Might want to hunker down in the afternoon." Yes, he said "hunker down." It's Nashville. A Starbucks and a CVS I stopped at both had signs up stating, "Closing early due to impending weather." Apparently the storm was something to be concerned about. And of course the church I was at was smack dab in the middle of it all.

In the afternoon the sky shifted hue in the blink of an eye. Darkness came in an instant. I stepped outside when it first started up and took this video of the hail coming down:

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss

Today would have been Theodor Seuss Geisel's 108th birthday. I was thinking earlier today that I have never heard anyone say that they dislike his work. Sure it might have happened, it isn't like I have a photographic memory. But I really don't think I've ever heard someone say that. Have you? Seriously - who would? (Don't tell me - I honestly don't want to hear about it. The world can't have gotten that bad)

When I was younger Green Eggs & Ham and Horton Hears a Who were my top favorites. My fourth grade class did Horton as a play and I was one of the vultures who carried Horton away. Skimming his work on Amazon's page for the good Dr, titles I had forgotten are coming back to me like my grandma had just read them to me yesterday: In a People House, There's a Wocket in my Pocket, and Mr Brown Can Moo, Can You? When I was a little older and in school I remember being fascinated learning that Yertle the Turtle was about Hitler. And I remember reading and rereading and rereading and rereading Oh, the Places You'll Go.

The Daydream Believer: Dec 30, 1945 - Feb 29, 2012

I have always been a Monkeys fan. Loved reruns of the show when I was little and have always loved their music. The Monkeys Greatest Hits isn't one of those CD's you listen to all of the time, but when you do bust it out it is guaranteed to produce loud volumes, big smiles, and sing-alongs by even the most untalented of voices (speaking of myself).

So finding out that Davy Jones passed away yesterday was a sad blow to cherished memories. I can't think of him or The Monkeys without starting to hum this song...

The end of this was always my favorite, when they all battled over who would stand in front.

This week indeed is an appropriate time to crank up "Last Train to Clarksville" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday." Appreciate this artist and all of the great enjoyable times he contributed to over the years.
