Memorial Day and an old faded tattoo

Memorial Day to me is my grandfather.

Papa served two terms in the Korean war. I remember when I was little finding a box at his house with various mementos from the Army. Money. A knife. Pictures. And I remember the awe that came over me. "Papa is a soldier!"

He never really wanted to talk about his time there. When I was little that didn't make sense to me, but it does now.

To this day Papa has the word "Army" tattooed on his arm. Its faded now but still legible.

Tragically, my soldier grandfather, who served two terms in the Korean war, now bed ridden in his Highland Indiana home while suffering from Alzheimer's, was told recently that he is ineligible for financial help from the Veteran's administration.

Apparently his tattoo isn't legible to various entities of our government.

Memorial Day to me is my grandfather.
Memorial Day to me is also my cousin. My uncles. Various friends.

I have deep thankfulness for these individuals who sacrifice and have sacrificed in a way that really can't be fathomed by those of us who haven't done it.

I pray that what they've given doesn't fade away like an old tattoo.

This pic is of Papa and Baylee, taken on Memorial Day six years ago.

Week in review #27

One week of 2012 down, 51 one to go. The last time I did a week in review post (#16) was a few months ago. That lost time was summarized in a post last week, so things continue on with #27. This one is coming right from a trip to the nation's capital:

First day of 5 years old

Yesterday we partied.
Yesterday we celebrated.

Yesterday was about going from this moment...

To this moment...

But today it hit me. Again.
As she woke up, as she got ready for school.
As she yelled, "Daddy! Daddy!" when I walked in the door.
As we we painted and as I gave her piggy back rides.

Today the reality of days continually being added hit me. Again.

My awe of holding this little one has only grown, even more than she has.
I want her to get bigger as much as I don't want her to.

These are the pains of being a daddy I guess.
But I wouldn't trade them for all of the world.

Week in review #14

This was one of those weeks filled with everything. Some excitement, some low, some fun, some dull. It was all over the map:

Week in review #10

It's hard to believe that summer is over, but I am indeed one who prefers the weather of fall. Such is life, and we keep rolling on...

Week in Review #6

I'm sitting in LaGuardia airport, waiting to catch the flight back home with the fam. 10 days in NY was amazing, but we're ready for being back in sweet home Chicago. Just the same, here's the past week:

Week in Review

I've been really trying to get into a regular blogging rhythm lately.  It's just a good place for me to process what I'm experiencing in life, regardless what it is (scroll to the bottom of the page and read the left column, as far as why I do this blog). One cool thing I've seen in the writings of other bloggers I follow is the concept of a day for random meandering.  Ben Arment calls it his "Wednesday Morning Run Down" and Tim Schraeder calls his the "Monday Mind Dump." Love this idea, and am going to learn from it. For me Saturdays will be the best day for meandering, hence, "The Week in Review."

Here we go...

"I'm Watching You Dad"

I had the privilege of speaking at church yesterday for Father's Day. The text was Mark 1:14-20. Hopefully will have it posted for download soon. But...this is a video that I used during the message:

Really didn't need to say anything, the video nails it.

I'm incredibly honored and privileged to be "daddy" to this girl whom I love so much:

This is Baylee at her cousin Vincent's Star Wars theme birthday party this past weekend.

I just figured out how to post pictures/comments from my phone directly to this blog. THAT is a cool feature!

Baylee's first trip to B&N - as you can see, she is very happy to be there.
